Final report Kid`s festival 6

A few words by the festival director:
There are three essential highlights to mention about this 6th edition:
1. The Kid’s Parade, which turned the entire city centre of Sarajevo into a boiling happy crowd, offering what old & young have not experienced in a lifetime: an old lady said: “we didn’t even have such a thing before the war”. A magic word. After 15 years in Sarajevo this is the first time I hear that something is better than it was before…
2. The outreach to the Pediatric Clinic by sending Kid's Festival Performers there, bringing magic to these children, too sick to attend the festival, a very emotional moment for those who enjoyed the show, children, parents, clinic staff, as well as for those performing.
3. The first Presidential visit. Last year I said: “Kid’s festival will overcome the ignorance of the political environment.” This is done. The member of the BH presidency, Mr. Zeljko KOMSIC promised never again to miss the chance to attend with his children. “The educative system in BiH divides the children, and only Kid's Festival provides a space for them to get closer to each
other…Kid's Festival contributes to make children “mentally healthy people, ready to become European citizens, a task the BH authorities fail so far”.
This statement matches exactly what has expressed Constantino Longares Barrio, Chargé d'affaires of the European Union concerning the support of Kid's Festival: ”It is our duty and obligation, and duty of the BiH society, to provide them healthy surrounding and enable them to become model citizens of this country and, in not so distant future, citizens of the European Union."
The balance of activities & workshops, the interaction between entertainment role and education was perfect. The Franco German Friendship is a lighthouse example for BiH. The idea to revive the memory of the historic handshake of Charles de Gaulle and Konrad Adenauer in Colombey, 50 years ago, with a Balloon-event was an unusual challenge – but it worked and showed how important a little symbolic gesture can be, like this one that stood for tremendous change in Europe. We have taken a responsible leadership role, not simply growing but multiplying: Helped by ViaKult Office a Kosovo Kid's Festival will soon exist. The spirit of Kid's Festival is a personal encounter
with the future, the epicenter of a stream of ideas. A true movement going far beyond the borders of BiH, gaining the cyberspace, facebook, youtube, bloggers, forums, online-news publications: here we are and here we go. We will continue to convey a vision to hundreds of thousands of young people. We
oblige to DREAM BIG, and that means for all: making dreams our personal obligation. I believe that the often discussed desire of the Youth to "flee" BiH is not really economically motivated, but, choking on old-fashioned spirits the Youth seeks modern life-style outside BiH. Kid's Festival represents, if nothing
else, a little piece of freedom, a window to the world, a touch of inspiration, the 21st century – right here in BiH. A privilege that tens of thousands of young Bosnians enjoy. And the entire international community with them! Spread the virus of Kid's Festival, let’s build the future at the magic 7 next year!
To be continued…

The transport effort was supported by the European Union, EUFOR, NATO, UNICEF, the EUPM, the local police institutions, the ICRC, the local Red Cross and Sumero. Under the umbrella of the EUPM, Police officers from both entities chaperoned children’s groups to the festival.
PROGRAM – a day at Kid’s festival In the morning while the children travel to the festival, the artists get ready for their performance. It’s setup time. The program officially starts at 14h00 – but once more the festival doors opened a little bit hours earlier due to the large number of visitors that arrived in advance. Zetra offers huge space, inside as well as outside. Once the visitors enter the festival area, they are in a fenced-in safe place where even small children can play around without fear: Zetra is not a public place, but we acquire the whole complex to guarantee safety, modern infrastructure and hygienic premises for the visitors. This year the festival significantly increased the participation of entertainers, workshops and foreign performers. As in
the previous years the young and adult public enjoyed the widespread panoply of colorful program items that make Kid’s festival a real “Kid’s planet”.
The entire VIP area of Zetra turns into a colorful Kid’s Space. The SWISS exhibition Comic land Switzerland gave the entry to this space the right feel and opened the world of imagination, being continued at the inside with a workshop for little cartoon talents…
VIP guests and children shared fun and learned about children’s rights at the SAVE THE CHILDREN SPACE, discovered funny stories at the BOOK CORNER chaperoned by the French Institute and Mali Princ from Tuzla. At the VIDEO CORNER the actress Nancy Abdel Sakhi told children all about film making, stories turned into scenarios, she make kids enjoy a high quality selection of prize winning short films from PRIX JEUNESSE and ARTE. The LITTLE REPORTERS, workshop run by the youth magazine editors of Vesele Sveske / Barimba, taught first steps for journalists.
The special 30 minutes Grand show by OUT OF AREA was again one of the highlights at the end of the Kid's Festival Day, before the film screening: The entire Zetra turned into a huge dancing-kids-crowd in which all, old and young, VIPs & volunteers, performers & public were dancing and partying. Again a flair of “Las Vegas” reached out at Kid's Festival. As the days passed by, the children were literally invading the stage. The film screening at 17h00 remained the rendezvous for everybody at the end of the day.

Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th were days dedicated to the children with special needs which have participated at all different workshops including those of the of Italian Cooperation, Out of Area, UNICEF and others. The transport of for these children was mainly organized by the ICRC, the National Red Cross Society and SUMERO.

This year’s Kid's Festival Motto: ALL DIFFERENT – ALL EQUAL

FRANCO-GERMAN FRIENDSHIP – 50 years of a historical “Handshake”
50 years ago, (14. September 1958) the first meeting between France and Germany, Charles de Gaulle and Konrad Adenauer took place in Colombey. Sometimes little symbolic gestures can stand for tremendous change, such was this historical handshake a start off for the friendship between both
countries, which had been at war three times in 70 years, and a clear sign of their dedication to build a new, peaceful EUROPE. Kid's Festival revived this historic moment in a special Kid’s Way: a Balloonshow, with clowns, magicians, musicians from Alsace/ France & BiH, Balloon artists from Germany and Canada showed how to make frontiers disappear and create a common roof for all of us: EUROPE.
UNICEF 500 – 1,000 children joined the UNICEF-Corner and “Wall of wishes” per day, a total of ca. 4,000 participants during the entire Kid’s festival. In a small separate “Movie-Corner”, they enjoyed 12 educative short-cut movies about reality and mistakes in many schools in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In
combination with 9 roll-ups - highlighting the rights of the children - the participants in the age between 4 and 15 got ideas and helpful suggestions to create their own “Child-friendly School” by drawings, lyrics, poems or what ever the children decided to do for the “UNICEF Creativity Contest”.
MDG-F About 600 participants per day, children as well as teachers from special invited schools (in cooperation with the NGO “Genesis Project”) and regular festival visitors were participating in the MDG F-Corner. All learned about the background of the Millennium Development Goals during a small
overview appropriate for children, many flip-charts etc which made these workshops interactive. The small quiz with 10 multiple-choice-questions to Millennium Development Goals helped to develop the output together with the kids and was great fun for them, receiving gifts at the end.

Distributed Gifts & Prizes & Refreshments
Sponsors, embassies, international organizations, local NGOs, commercial firms and individual donors offered the children of Bosnia & Herzegovina an unforgettable moment in their lives, and a maximum of gifts, toys, sweets, snacks, refreshments… Approximately. 10,000 Kid’s festival t-shirts, 10,000 giftbags, 5000 key-jays, 50,000 stickers, 6,000 pens, 1,500 posters, 2,000 notebooks, 200 caps, 500 books, Swiss baseball caps in uncountable numbers, 10,000 liters of Sinalco, 6,000 liters of mineral water, 5,000 hot snacks OVAKO, 12,000 sandwiches were distributed free of charge, thousands of PEZ candies & gifts (Pez Bombon:15,000, Pez give-aways: 16,319), Cacao drinks (Nesquick), Cereals (Cokolino by Podravka)…

Visibility, press & media feed-back
Kid’s festival once again, was on all TV screens in the country and invaded the Media space fully: The local channels reported about the festival as main news, like NTV Hayat, BHT1, Federal TV, RTRS, TV Sarajevo, OBN, Pink TV, Local TV Lukavica, all radios like RSG, BH1, Radio Federacije, Radio RS, Kameleon, radio 202 etc… as well as all BiH newspapers like Dnevni Avaz, Nezavisne Novine, San, Slobodna Bosna and online media as BH DAILY and www.sarajevo-x.com, www.sarajevo.co.ba, www.bosnia-x.com, www.radiosarajevo.ba, www.depo.ba, www.cia.ba, www.fena.ba, www.city.ba,

Statement of the European Union, Constantino Longares Barrio, Chargé d'affaires:
The support of the EU amounts to 100,000 € for Kid’s festival 2008 & 2009
"Post-war aid and reconstruction primarily addressed the humanitarian and developmental needs of children and women, but did not effectively tackle discrimination and social exclusion. There is strong evidence indicating the
existence of specific vulnerabilities of children and consequent social exclusion based on poverty, disability, displacement, ethnicity (especially Roma), gender, religion and rural/urban divide. Due to socioeconomic exclusion and discrimination, children in BiH are increasingly exposed to multiple vulnerabilities emerging from exploitation and abuse combined with exclusion of their families. A number of small scale initiatives have been carried out by the EC Delegation to BiH, through both macro and micro projects financed by the European Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights, which were aimed at social integration of vulnerable groups of children, in particular Roma.
Many of these projects have been successful on a local level and one of the most important is the Kid Festival initiative that we will continue to support in future under the Instrument for Pre-accession Assistance. The children
of BiH are vital to ensuring that the country has a healthy future, looking forward rather than back. The NGO "Viakult" organises the "Kid's Festival" bringing together children from different cultural and geographical backgrounds from all over the country in the Summer of each year in what is the only exercise of its kind in the country. To overcome isolation of children within BiH by building of entity-crossing networks and strengthening mutual understanding among the different ethnic groups, support to organization of the Kid’s Festival is provided by the European Commission. This will give a unique opportunity to at least 40,000 children from all BiH to participate a
week of films, workshops, entertainment, sharing and interaction to develop an appreciation and understanding of other cultures.
The awareness raising component of this project may contribute to building stronger linkages between national and international initiatives around its idea of peace and confidence building amongst children from all over BiH. This is an
effective compliment to the refugee return projects supported by CARDS. BIH has the status of a pre-accession country and is a signatory to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UN CRC) and the Millennium Declaration. Despite considerable progress in various domains over the past decade, BiH still faces a number of constraints to development and
lack of strategic and consistent approach to policy-making (including the children related one). The Instrument for Preaccession Assistance (IPA) programs in BiH envisage support to UNICEF and ViaKult and assistance has been designed with consideration among other strategic documents the European agendas and strategies such as EU Child Rights Policy and EU Convention on Human Rights.
We are hoping that supporting and implementing these initiatives we will be able to contribute that every girl and boy will have access to education, to be free of violence and discrimination and to pave their way to a bright future and open the gate of great achievements and success. It is our duty and obligation, and duty of the BiH society, to provide them healthy surrounding and enable them to become model citizens of this country and, in not so distant future, citizens of the European Union."

Statement of UNICEF BiH, Anne-Claire Dufay, Representative a.i.:
"This year again, UN Agencies, including UNICEF, are extremely pleased to participate in the Kid’s Festival, the largest event for children and youth in the country and in the Balkans. We strongly support the theme of the Festival: “All different, all equal” which also correspond to underlying principles of the Millennium Development Goals Achievement Fund. This year is particularly special as we are celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The Convention has brought measurable and concrete advances in the protection of children. It has articulated child participation and nondiscrimination as fundamental rights of the child. However, there are many challenges ahead, and we still need to address the inequities and violations that continue to undermine childhood".
